Erosion still active in tunnel beneath Kasaragod house; soil pipe extends under road, finds survey

The underground tunnel discovered beneath Sadan and Ramya’s house in Kasaragod’s Kuttikol panchayat more than a month ago is still active, with erosion continuing beneath the property and extending across the road outside their house. A ground-penetrating radar survey by NCESS scientists found that the soil pipe has spread beneath the road.

The scientists will recommend measures to fortify the road and assess whether the house and surrounding infrastructure can be made safe. NCESS scientists are also recommending stricter building rules in areas prone to soil piping, including ensuring that no underground soil pipe exists beneath a site before construction begins. The phenomenon has been widely observed in Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram and Wayanad.
