BJP's insistence on singing all the six stanzas of Vande Mataram is understandable. It is their declared political project. Congress's project is not Hindu nationalism but secularism. The party's secular leanings have prompted stalwarts like Jawaharlal Nehru to accept the first two stanzas of the national song as a living and inseparable part of the national movement. The rest, it firmly believes, has allusions that did not sit well with the plurality of the country.
