Zumba to promote awareness on breast cancer

The dance was conducted to educate both teachers and students about the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

Kottayam: Breast cancer has been ranked the leading cancer among Indian females. As the world marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the BCM College here also did its part in this regard by holding a session of Zumba dance, the popular fitness programme developed by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez. The dance was conducted to educate both teachers and students about the causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

The students and teachers of the English department organised the awareness programme in collaboration with Dr Shiny and Shivani, instructors and founders of the Dr Shiny Shivani Zumba Fitness.

A balanced diet and regular exercise help in preventing cancer, said Dr Shiny. She urged the students and teachers to lead a healthy and happy lifestyle.

"The response from the college was very energetic and spectacular," said Dr Shiny as the dance concluded.

The students donned pink ribbon and displayed various placards with useful information on them. Pink is worn to honour survivors, remember those who lost to the disease and to support the progress we are making together to defeat breast cancer.

"It was both an entertaining and healthy program," said Krishnendu, a second-year UG student.

Anitha, a third-year student, said that the event was very informative as she learned new things and promised to do Zumba everyday for half an hour.
