The Journalism and Mass Communication students of the English and Foreign Languages University, Shillong Campus, recently undertook a study tour to a few villages on the outskirts of the Meghalaya capital. It was part of the Development Journalism course and led by its chief Professor Ravindra Kumar Vemula.
The students were split into groups of four and were asked to cover the villages: Umktieh Mukhim, Umktieh Nongshilliang, Umktieh Pdeng and Umktieh Lawsetsniang. They were asked to gather primary data and to assess the various developmental problems faced by the villagers.
Located 25 km away from Shillong, Umktieh village is a part of the Ribhoi district of Meghalaya primarily known for its ginger and strawberry cultivation. The village is also known for the recent runway expansion for the Shillong airport project.
Each group was accompanied by a translator who helped the group communicate with the villagers and to navigate the terrain. The students reportedly gained first-hand concerning the increase in drop out rates among high school students, problems caused by scarcity and poor quality of water, lack of basic healthcare facilities etc.
The students were later directed to present their findings from their respective walks and to construct a map of the surrounding village.
The visitors felt the villagers were "very welcoming and kind.” “It was a very different experience for us. I learned so much during such a little time,” said Adyasha Mishra, a second-year student.
The hospitality and love of the villagers moved the students as they left with heavier backpacks filled with gifts of ginger, melon, beans and not to mention a huge smile on their faces.
New friendships were formed and stories exchanged.
