Vishnu Vinod, who has emerged the top scorer from Kerala in the Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is now focusing on cracking the JEE-Advanced examination scheduled for May 19.

A 12th standard student of KE School Mannanam in Kottayam district, Vishnu secured the top spot by scoring 99.9990801 percentile in the examination. Son of Vinod Kumar and Chandni of Sankaramangalam, Anakkara in Idukki, he hopes to pursue Computer Science in the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras after clearing the Plus Two examinations.

In an interview with Manorama, the 17-year-old attributed his success to hard work and a rigourous study routine.

Excerpts:

Were you expecting to secure the top rank?

The Organic Chemistry exam was a bit tough as there were some unfamiliar questions. All the other papers were easy and I was confident of doing pretty well. I was looking to score maximum marks in the first round. Thankfully, it did happen.

Tell us about your preparation methods…

In the beginning, it was not easy as I was unsure about how to start and what to study. But eventually everything fell into place. On weekdays, I would study for five hours while during holidays my study sessions were usually for 10 hours a day. Initially, I used to take mock tests once a week in order to evaluate my level of preparation. When the exam was nearing, I started to attempt mock tests on a daily basis. Certainly, tough and quality mock tests helped me find the priority areas and the most probable questions.

Did the online examination system bother you?

Not at all. One of the advantages of online test was that the candidates could do away with colouring the bubble on OMR sheets which is a time-consuming exercise.

How do you prepare for the JEE-Advanced examination?

The advanced exams will have more indirect questions. It requires an in-depth knowledge of concepts and understanding of subjects. I will have to take more mock tests to find out my weak areas and work accordingly to bridge that gap.

What are your future plans?

Computer Science is my favourite subject. I wish to pursue computer science engineering from IIT Madras.
