Kuttikkanam film fest highlights the freedom of filmmakers

The second edition of the Kuttikkanam International Film festival concluded on Sunday. The event titled ‘Kathrika 2019', which was organised by the Communication and Media Studies Department of the Marian College (Autonomous), stressed on protecting the liberty of filmmakers.

Among the 35 films in the short film competition ‘Pullanchi’ and ‘Eettanu’ won the first and second prize respectively. ‘Aazhiyile Pranayam’ bagged the special jury award.

Renowned film critic and director Vijaykrishnan who inaugurated the valedictory function said, “Censorship is the challenging question that every filmmaker face in their lifetime. If the censor board members don’t show impartiality, the freedom of expression and creativity will die out. But, living in a democratic country like India, sometimes censor certification makes some sense."

College principal Rev.Dr. Roy P Abraham said films communicate with people. "The process of creative communication continues through short films and social media in the new era," he noted while delivering the presidential address.

'Kathrika 2019’ was a tribute to all those people who demanded uncensored space for centuries. We have screened some of the movies which struggled a lot to get its big screen due to censorship”, said Nasiha Sadik, student coordinator.

The Kottayam regional coordinator of the Chalachithra Academy Shaji Ambattu, festival director Fr. Sobi Kannalil, college manager Fr. James Kozhimala, the department director Prof. M. Vijayakumar and student coordinators Nasiha Sadik, Kebin K Thomas presided over the function.
