Kottayam: The Mahathma Gandhi University Youth Festival 'Alathalam 2019' came to a spectacular end on Monday. Sacred Heart College, Thevara, retained the overall championship with 118 points. They also became the champions in literary and music events. Its students also won the first prize for Group Song (Eastern), Skit and Group Song (Western) and third position for Duffmuttu and Mime.
St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, which holds the record for bagging the overall championship trophy for seven consecutive years, however had to settle for the second position this time. It managed to retain their claim on the Nataraja Trophy. Teresians managed to be the winners in Oppana, Group Dance and Thiruvathira and claimed the second position in Group Song (Western).
RLV College of Music and Fine Arts, Thrippunithura, finished third after edging Maharaja’s College by one point. However the latter managed to snatch the Silver Horse trophy from Sacred Heart College which had secured the trophy in the 2018 youth festival. This honour is awarded to the college that bags the maximum number of points in theatre events.
Poornasree Haridas, a B Com final-year student of Sacred Heart College, was adjudged the Kalathilakam, the title for the best performer. She won the frist prize in Classical Music, Light Music and Kavitha Paranayam with the maximum number of points for individual events.
Several events were conducted across seven different stages at four venues named after youth and leftist icons. The stages were called Abhimanyu Nagar, Simon Britto
Nagar, Lenin Rajendran Nagar, Bala Bhaskar Nagar, Mrinal Sen Nagar, Sister Lini Nagar and Captain Raju Nagar.
The four venues in the Kottayam town were Thirunakkara Maidanam, CMS College, Baselius College and BCM College.
The fest had commenced on February 28.
