Here's a new MBA course from IIM-Rohtak for Class 12 students

It is an increasingly competitive world that's out there, one where there are not too many jobs to start with. Just last year, around 20 million people applied for under 100,000 jobs with the Indian Railways. It is that fierce. It's no surprise then that jobs are one of the top issues dominating the election campaign.

Everyone out there hunting for jobs has decent qualifications. Most would already have an MBA degree and one in ten you meet would have got theirs from a prestigious university abroad. Your qualifications alone will not suffice anymore. You need the right social skills to succeed. You also need to be able to keep up with ever-evolving modes of business and stay clued in on the latest in technology. In short, you need to be a leader.

That is precisely what IIM-Rohtak is doing. With their new five-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM),  not only are they instilling key foundational knowledge in students, but are also moulding these young talents into leaders. Open to Class 12 students, this five-year programme offers a unique blend of key social science subjects with core management subjects to ensure that students have a deeper understanding of the multifaceted world of business.

“During my tenure at IIM Rohtak, I have tried to meet as many faculty, staff, students and corporate leaders as I could. Through many exchanges, I have come to appreciate the uniqueness of IIM Rohtak's learning experience that ties us together. Therefore, an idea to create a holistic programme that is unique and free from curriculum redundancies has led us to introduce Give-Year Integrated Programme in Management”, Prof. Dheeraj P Sharma, Director of IIM Rohtak said.

The course has been designed to equip tomorrow's business leaders will analytical thinking skills, interpersonal competence, and on how to make decisions with ethical orientation. The programme will be taught by top-notch faculty from all IIMs including Rohtak, industry experts, and from foreign institutions. They include Ulster University and Sheffield Hallam University in the UK and the University of San Francisco, Lamar University in Texas and Tulane University in the US.

Though the program started just two years ago, the response has been phenomenal. The students at IIM-Rohtak come from diverse backgrounds and from 20 states. This diversity allows for an environment that emboldens creativity, confidence, and candour in these future business leaders. Also, diversity in the class adds to the diversity in perspectives, opinions, and ideas which in turn results in increased sharpness of solution offered to various business problems. IIM Rohtak has always given utmost importance to diversity in its students in the form of academic, demographic, and gender.

“With our aim to have a high level of diversity in its students and faculty, we continue to emphasize on 'recruitment' and not 'selection' to attract the best in the country to IIM Rohtak,” Prof Sharma added. Scholarships are also awarded to meritorious students.

While it's true that most new companies do not require you to have such in-depth training in management studies, you won't be doing it for any one company or any one profile. You will be doing it for yourself, to become the leaders you are. The name IIM alone would guarantee that everything else would fall in place on its own and perfectly. But if the five-year commitment seems a little daunting to you, there are also provisions to exit after three years and still take away a bachelors degree and countless memories.

This renewed focus to see social sciences included in what is otherwise a very rigorous and thorough business management curriculum is indeed a step in the right direction.

“My view is that most of the people generally classify subjects as hard science and soft sciences. We usually consider social sciences as soft science which possibly lead to the development of soft skills. However, my view is that soft skills are hardest to acquire and most important for the progress of society. Therefore, I believe that social sciences make a pivotal impact on any educational institution as it requires high intellectual activity both for the instructor and instructed. Education in social sciences probably involves understanding human beings, society and its structure, through essential interpretive and assessment tool, skills and perspectives that may offer the highest value to a society or a nation”, Prof. Sharma added.

There are only 160 seats for the programme and the last date to apply is May 10. Apply here.
