The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is a fellowship programme that encourages students to take up science research studies.

The KVPY qualification will also benefit students seeking admission to the four-year BS programme of the Indian Institute of Science Bengaluru and the five-year integrated programmes at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER). 

Fellowship

The fellowship can be availed till pre-PhD level for a maximum of five years. A monthly fellowship Rs 5,000 and an annual grant of Rs 20,000 will be given for the first three years in the undergraduate level.

This will be increased to Rs 7,000 and Rs 28,000 for the fourth and fifth years, respectively, in the post-graduate level. The aid will be extended only if the students successfully clear the exams each year. They need to secure a minimum of 60 per cent marks or equivalent grades. Students in the SC/SCT and differently-abled category need to secure 50 per cent marks or the equivalent grade.

Students will also need to excel in the summer camp of the first year and summer projects in the subsequent years.

Students pursuing professional courses such as engineering, medical and agricultural cannot join in the programme. Also, no fellowship for distant courses.

The fellowship is only for Indian students to pursue higher studies in the country. But as per court order, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and Person of Indian Origin (PIO) candidates can also write the exams

Apply by October 5

Online applications for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana programme should be made within October 5.

Only online applications can be made through the official website www.kvpy.iisc.ernet.in. Step-by-step instructions on the application process are given on the site. 

The exam fee of Rs 1,250 should be paid online. The fee is Rs 625 for students in the SC/ST and in the differently-abled category. 

Selection process

Eligible students will be called in for the online aptitude test on January 31, 2021. All districts in Kerala have an exam centre, except Wayanad. 

The website has the question papers and answers key for the past 11 years. Mock tests will also be made available soon.

Subjects: Chemistry, physics, maths, stats, biochemistry, microbiology, cell biology, ecology, molecular biology, botany, zoology, physiology, biotechnology, neuroscience, bioinformatics, marine biology, geology, human biology, genetics, biomedical science, applied physics, geophysics, material science, environmental science.

Students who have secured a minimum of 75 per cent in the class 10 exams and joined for science stream in class 11 for the 2020-21 academic year. Students in the SC/ST and differently-abled category should have secured a minimum of 65 percent. The fellowship will be disbursed only after joining for one of the afore-mentioned courses for the academic year 2022-23.  Also, the students need to secure a minimum of 60 per cent marks in class 12 exams. The cut-off marks for students in the SC/ST and differently-abled category is 50 percent.

The students will also have to participate in the science camp during the interim year. The KVPY will take care of all their expenses. 

Students who have joined science stream in class 12 in 2020-21 and those who plan to continue higher studies in basic science for the academic year 2021-2022. 

Students should have cleared class 10 with a minimum of 75 per cent marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects. Students in the SC/ST and differently-abled category should have secured at least 65 percent marks. Also, students should have scored a minimum of 60 per cent marks in science subjects in class 12 exams. And for students in SC/ST and the differently-abled category, it is only 50 percent marks.

Students in the first year of undergraduate course (2020-21) in basic sciences and have secured a minimum of 60 percent marks in aggregate in maths and science subjects. Students in the SC/ST and differently-abled category should have a minimum of 50 percent marks. The fellowship will be given only if the students secure a minimum of 60 percent marks in the final exam of first-year. It is 50 percent for students in the SC/ST and differently-abled category.
