It is heartening to note that there is no room for apprehension for students as the world is connected and enabled by the internet even during COVID times.

It is but necessary to find out the right tastes and aptitudes of children as they pursue their graduation/engineering or any other course.

The next step would be to attain the requisite skill sets to augment their capabilities. Here are a few tips to go about that on one’s own:

• Google and find out the 25 most important industries/sectors in the world. Example: banking, IT, etc…

• Identify the top-10 companies in each sector.

• Set Google weekly alerts for the top companies that you have identified. Keeping track of the latest in every industry, the new challenges, innovations, and key findings will help one make informed choices later in life.

• Create Google alerts in trending topics and topics of one’s interest, like artificial intelligence, alternative energy etc. Keep reading diligently and follow-up on interesting topics.

• Consider Google a world-class university. Use Google and YouTube to take lessons and courses as you do regular courses. One can also take part in discussions on topics of interest. Be part of LinkedIn groups that take up the latest topics for discussion. Read up the small notes and essays put out on social discussion platforms. Network with professionals and try to publish blogs on topics of interest.

• Take courses that would add value to one’s skillsets

• Gain competence in the use of the English language. This is one aspect that could place one ahead in a job search. Pay attention to current news, latest debates and the way names, places and themes are pronounced. Watch English films and read fiction and non-fiction alike. Use a dictionary to comprehend the language better. Form groups which could engage in group discussions in English. One should be careful about the concept called ‘mother tongue influence’ where the pronunciation of Malayalam words could influence one’s English utterances.

The above tips are sure to be of use to students during course selection; parents, teachers, and career counsellors; job-seekers; and trainers.
