No annual exam for Class 9 students

The Department of General Education on Monday decided to not conduct annual examinations for Class 9 students, and instead promote them to Class 10 based on criteria including attendance in online classes.

Earlier, the all-pass system was to be implemented until Class 8. A decision on exams for Class 11 will be taken later.

Last year, Class 9 students were promoted on the basis of their first and second term exams. As more exams were moved online this year, the department has chosen to pass the students on other criteria.

The development came in wake of the ongoing COVID crisis in the state.

The SSLC and Plus examinations, though earlier scheduled to begin on March 17 and 24 respectively, have been postponed to April 8.

The move comes amid concern that conducting the exams in March-April would clash with the Assembly polls in the state (April 6) and create logistical difficulties as classrooms are often utilised for election purposes.

Teachers too are roped in for election duties and they are set to commence their training for poll duties shortly.
