Excellent training and placement opportunities at BARC await engineering, science graduates

Applications are invited to the training schemes for candidates who wish to pursue a career in nuclear science, engineering and technology at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, that operates under the Department of Atomic Energy.

The successful completion of the training schemes guarantee employment as scientific officers. The candidates can even pursue research in subjects like physics, chemistry and geology.

1. The Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Post Graduates (OCES) is a one-year reputed programme of the BARC training schools for engineering graduates and science post- graduates. The candidates are provided training at the five training schools of BARC. Those who successfully complete this training scheme would be appointed as scientific officers at the Department of Atomic Energy.

Meanwhile, the BTech graduates would be admitted for M Tech courses at the Homi Bhabha National Institute, which is a deemed university. Those who aren’t interested in this would be awarded a Post- Graduate Diploma depending on their performance.

2. DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates and Physics Postgraduates (DGFS) is a two-year scheme.

The applicants would be admitted to the M Tech/M Tech Chemical Engineering courses at one of the stipulated institutes. After a year of study, the aspirant should undertake a project at the college, in a topic proposed by the DAE. They would be appointed as scientific officers after the successful completion of the course. There will be a four–month orientation course too.

Monthly stipend
During the training period, trainees of both categories would get a monthly stipend of Rs 55,000 and Rs 18,000 as book allowance. Besides, a one-time contingency grant of Rs 25,000 and tuition fee would be provided additionally for the MTech/ M Chem Engg students.

Interested candidates should register on the website www.barconlineexam.in within 11 February.

The candidates have to stay in the hostels of the Department of Atomic Energy during the training period. Refer the website for more details.

Eligibility
The applicants should be BTech graduates in one of these streams: Mchanical, chemical, metallurgical, electrical, electronics, computer science, instrumentation, civil and nuclear engineering. They should have passed B Tech with at least 60% marks.

Those who had completed a five-year integrated M Tech too can apply.

Aspirants who have post-graduation in science subjects like physics, applied physics, chemistry, geology and applied geo chemistry too can submit applications. However, those who are MSc (by research) graduates or have PhD need not apply.

Age and fees
The applicants shouldn’t cross 26 years as on 1 August. However, it is 29, 31 and 36 years for backward classes, scheduled castes/scheduled tribes and persons with disabilities respectively.

An application fee of Rs 500 should be paid while submitting the online application.

Women, transgender candidates, persons with disabilities and wards of those who had died in wars need not paid the application fee.

Two-way selection
As there are two methods of selection, the aspirants can choose either one or both.
1. GATE 2021-2022: The specific papers of GATE are mentioned on the website. The GATE score should be uploaded within 13 April.
2. Online screening test in 3 science subjects and 9 engineering streams. The test has been scheduled from 7 to 13 April. There will be 40 exam centres. The slots for these centres could be booked from 4 to 18 March.

Those who are eligible in the first method would be selected on the basis of interview.
