MTech: Now, classroom studies only in the first year

Thiruvananthapuram: The Technological University is all set to completely overhaul the MTech courses. The Board of Governors has accepted the recommendations of the Academic Council and the Syndicate.

For the two-year course, classroom studies will be held only during the first two semesters. The second year will be entirely devoted to online courses (MOOC), industry-related internship and projects.

Also, the current cluster system for the conduct of the MTech courses is being done away with. Instead, the Board of Governors has recommended to implement a unified system from the 2022-23 academic year onwards, in which the courses will be directly under the purview of the University.

Other recommendations:

  • All colleges, affiliated to Technological University, will have a unified system for the MTech courses from now on.
  • In the second year of the course, the students can choose from two tracks. Those who opt for the first track will get the regular MTech degree. The second track is for those who are aiming for higher studies, research and entrepreneurship. Those who have 8.5 grade in the first semester or with a GATE score will have the opportunity to choose the second track. Also, need to have one publication in a journal in the third semester.
  • During the courses, the students will be allowed to take temporary leave of absence for two semesters. The courses have been designed to ensure expertise in the fields of industry, academic research and entrepreneurship.
