Marine Engineering opens a plethora of well-paying job opportunities in national and international commercial vessels.

The Cochin Shipyard, owned by the Government of India, offers a 12-month Graduate Marine Engineering(GME) course for those who are aspiring a career in this field. There are 114 seats up for grabs. Aspirants can seek admission on their own or as a sponsored candidate of a shipping company.

Successful candidates have to reside in the campus for the duration of the course. They have to pay a fee of Rs 4.85 lakh for accommodation, food and study materials. Initially, an amount of Rs 2,42,500 has to be paid. The remaining amount could be paid within 3 months.

Women candidates, meanwhile, need to pay Rs 3,72,500 as fee.

Eligibility
The applicants should be graduates with at least 50% marks in Mechanical Mechanical Engineering Technology (Naval Architecture) or Marine Engineering. Besides, they should have scored at least 50% marks in English in Class 10 or 12. Moreover, the candidates should not be past 28 years as on 1 September 2022.

The applicants should be fit with 157 centimetres height, proportional weight and chest size. They shouldn’t be colour-blind. Besides, the applicants should submit a fitness certificate provided by a medical officer approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. For details visit the website www.dgshipping.gov.in.

The candidates have to prove fitness in the Merchant Marine Personality Evaluation (MMPE) test that determines mental eligibility for a career in the seas.

Also, they should be passport holders.

The last date for submitting the application is 31 July. The application form could be downloaded from the website. The filled–in applications should be sent via speed post or as courier.

Those interested in the course should try to understand the working conditions in a ship before applying.

On completion of course, the candidates have to complete 6 months sea experience and pass the class IV competency exam instituted by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways before getting placed as a Junior Marine engineer Officer in a commercial vessel. They could then acquire work experience, complete short-term training sessions and obtain certificates that prove high competency to climb the career ladder up to the post of chief engineer.
