Thiruvananthapuram: Parents can now relax and schedule their busy mornings by tracking the school bus on a smart mobile application. The route of the school bus and the duration in which the bus will reach the respective stops would be updated in the Vidyavahini app. The Vidyavahini application is developed by the transport department.

Minister Antony Raju will launch the app on 7 June. The school buses are connected to the servers of the transport department using GPS. There are around 20,000 school busses running in countless routes in Kerala. Among them, only 14,000 are currently running after acquiring the fitness certificate. These buses are equipped with GPS system.

The process of fitting GPS in the school buses comes under the Surakshamitra scheme as part of the Nirbhaya project funded by the central government. The government has allotted around Rs 6 crore for this project. Even though the app was initially meant for the school authorities, the parents would be able to access it within two weeks.
