UG to PhD courses in agricultural varsities, apply for entrance exam

The National Testing Agency would conduct entrance examination for admission to the bachelors, masters and Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) programmes at various agricultural universities in the country.

The exam is conducted by NTA for the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). There will be one paper for each course.

The exam would have objective type questions and there will be negative marks for the wrong answers. The syllabus could be accessed from the website.

Interested candidates can submit the online applications until 5 pm on 20 August. The application fee has to be paid within 11.50 pm on 19 August. A single candidate shouldn’t submit more than one application.

Bachelors programmes
The 11 streams of study are: Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries, Forestry, Community Science, Food Nutrition and Dietetics, Sericulture, Agricultural Engineering, Diary Technology, Food Tech and Biotechnology. Veterinary course is not part of this.

The selection to 15% seats in the All–India Quota for the four-year bachelor’s degree at all the agricultural universities in India would be via an entrance test held offline.

Meanwhile, the selection to all the seats in National Diary Research Institute at Karnal, Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University at Jhansi and Dr Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University at Pusa in Samastipur, Bihar, would be through the online entrance test.

Students from home states wouldn’t be allowed to occupy more than 40% seats for a course in every university.

The 15% All–India Quota may even go up to 20%.

Besides, reservations are available as per the guidelines of the central government.

The applicants have to complete Plus-Two with at least 50% marks. Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates and persons with disabilities and transgender persons need only 40% marks.

Those who are awaiting the results of final-year exams too can apply.

Computer-based entrance test would be conducted in 200 centres across the country including 16 centres in Kerala. The date of examination will be announced later.

Scholarship
The students who get admission in the universities outside their home state would be elegiblefor National Talent Scholarship of Rs 3,000. However, the students at the universities in Jhansi and Pusa are not eligible for this; but, the respective universities would provide financial assistance to them.

The application fee is Rs 800. Applicants from backward communities and Economically Weaker Sections need to pay Rs 770. Meanwhile, it is Rs 400 for Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates, persons with disabilities and transgender persons.

B. Post-graduation courses
There are 19 major streams and various sub–streams for post-graduation.

The main branches are: Plant Biotechnology, Plant Sciences, Physical Sciences, Entomology and Nematology, Agronomy, Social Sciences, Statistical Sciences, Horticulture, Forestry/Agro–Forestry and Silvo–Forestry, Agri–Engineering and Tech, Community Sciences, Animal Biotech, Veterinary Science, Animal Sciences, Diary Science, Diary Tech, Food Science Tech and Agri Business Management.

The selection to 25% All–India Quota seats in the Masters programmes is also through a computerised entrance test. Meanwhile, all the Master degree seats at Indian Agricultural Research Institute in Delhi, Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Izatnagar, National Diary Research Institute at Karnal, Central Institute of Fisheries Education in Mumbai and the institutes in Jhansi and Pusa would be filled via an offline entrance test.

The 25% All–India Quota may go up to 30%.

The date of the entrance examination will be announced later.

The entrance fee is Rs 1,150/1,120/570 respectively. Successful students are eligible for National Talent Scholarship of Rs 12,600 as per the stipulations. Besides, there is an annual grant of Rs 6,000 too.

C. PhD programmes
The entrance exam for PhD programmes will be held for 70 subjects.

The selection to 25% All–India Quota PhD seats is through an offline entrance test. More seats are likely to be allotted via this selection process. Besides, the above mentioned 25% seats may be increased up to 30%.

Exam centres will be allotted in Kerala too.
