Around 9,05,590 candidates have written the Joint Entrance Exam – Main this year for admission to engineering/ technology, architecture/ planning degrees at the prominent institutes in the country including the National Institute of Technology. The candidates would get an idea about the position that they might get in the rank list by analysing the last rank scored in various departments, in the previous years. The ranking pattern of the previous years might not repeat as the trends change depending upon the number of seats, changing interests of the students and the general assessment of the programs.

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority / Central Seat Allocation Board makes the candidates do the choice filling and then allot the seats (https://josaa.nic.in; https://csab.nic.in). Around 2.5 lakh candidates will be selected from the BE/ BTech papers in JEE Main for the JEE Advanced test for admission to the Indian Institute of Technology, that will be held on 28 August. After the results are announced, the allotment to both the categories would be done together via a common counselling. For more details, refer httpa://josaa.admissions.nic.in.

In 2021, six rounds of JoSAA allotment were done for admissions to the Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Information Technology and other centrally funded technical institutes. The opening and the closing ranks at each institute could be understood from the respective websites. There will be further distinctions in these too. In the NITs, there are HS (Home State) and OS (Other State) categories. In each of these categories, rank lists would be prepared in around thirty sub categories including OPEN (all reserved categories too would be considered in these seats), OPEN – PwD, OBC – NCL – Female only, OBC – NCL – PwD, SC, SC – PwD and Economically Weaker Sections. However, HS – OS differentiation is not applicable in the IITs.

JoSAA’s list includes the ranks in each category. So, the 10297 open seats and the 3850 seats for the backward communities cannot be compared. One should find their position in the rank lists before analysing their chances for admission. Those who didn’t get chance in the first rounds may get another chance in the following rounds. Make sure to note the rank differences in the third and sixth rounds in the first and third lists. Candidates have to constantly check the websites for updates regarding as there may even be small changes in the admission procedure.
