BDes, MDes entrance tests in Jan; how to apply

Online applications are invited for the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) and Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) for admission to post-graduate and undergraduate design programmes conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

The applications could be submitted from 30 September to 21 October. The application fee is Rs 3,600. Meanwhile, women candidates, candidates from Scheduled Castes/Tribes and persons with disabilities need to pay Rs 1,800.

There would be additional service charges. Applications could be submitted until 29 October by paying a late fee of Rs 500.

The three-hour computer-based entrance test has been scheduled from 9 am to 12 pm on 22 January (Sunday). There are 24 exam centres including in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi.

UCEED
The IITs at Bombay, Guwahati and Hyderabad and the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing in Jabalpur (IIITDM) would conduct admission to the BDes courses based on the excellence in UCEED. A total of 199 seats is up for grabs; however, the number of seats could change. Besides, around 20 premier national institutes too would use the UCEED score for admission.

The Kerala Institute of Design at Kollam too considers UCEED score for admission to the BDes courses. It also considers the scores of the National Aptitude Test in Architecture.

The UCEED admission is open to those who passed Plus Two in 2022 and 2023. Even though three-year diploma holders can attend the exam, the admission would be based on the guidelines at the respective institutes.

The birth date of the applicants should not be before 1 October 1998. Age relaxation of up to 5 years is allowed for Scheduled Caste/Tribe candidates.

A single application for admission to the BDes courses in four institutes could be submitted from March 14 to 31 by paying a fees of Rs 3,000.

CEED
This entrance test is for admission to higher courses like Master of Design/PhD. The CEED score would be used for admission to the MDes programme at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and IITs at Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Roorkee and also for the PhD programmes at various IITs. Besides, 11 premier institutes in the country accept this score for various programmes.

The applicants should have earned a three-year degree/diploma/PG degree after completing Plus Two. Those taking their final exams in 2023 July too can apply.

Meanwhile, the applications of those who did a five-year Graduate Diploma (GD) in Arts after passing Class 10 exams would be considered. There is no age limit for applying for CEED. Besides, the candidates can write the exam any number of times.

Guidelines
As these are eligibility exams, merely showing excellence in these isn’t enough to ensure admission. The aspirants must carefully read the notification published by the institutes including IIT Bombay and submit applications at the right time.
