Thiruvananthapuram: The Government Medical College in Konni in Pathanamthitta district secured the much-awaited approval from the National Medical Commission just before this year’s admission to MBBS courses is set to begin.

Now, the total number of government MBBS seats in the State have gone up to 1,655.  Government Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram tops the list with 250 seats. The one in Kollam has 110 seats while 100 seats have been newly allotted to Konni Government Medical College.

Alappuzha and Kottayam government medical colleges have 175 MBBS seats each. Meanwhile, there are 100 seats in Idukki and 110 seats in Ernakulam. The Thrissur government medical college has 175 seats, while the one in Manjeri has 110 seats. There are 250 MBBS seats in the Kozhikode Medical College and 100 seats in Kannur.

Even though the medical colleges in Konni and Idukki were started during the tenure of the United Democratic Front government, they could get the approval only after the current government assumed power.

Meanwhile, the incumbent Left Democratic Front government opened nursing colleges in Kollam and the Manjeri medical colleges which were instituted by the UDF government. This created an additional 120 nursing seats in the state.

The Konni medical college is situated on Nedumpara Hill near Vattamon.
