New Delhi: The University Grants Commission, in its latest guidelines, has asked higher education institutions to hire ‘Professor of Practice’ who has an experience and expertise of at least 15 years in their specific profession.

The first phase of appointment could be done for one year without affecting the regular posts. Meanwhile, their tenure could be extended by one year for two more terms. Those who show excellent potential could be retained for one more year.

However, the maximum duration of service should not exceed four years.

Those who are appointed as Professor of Practice need not have the teaching eligibility or qualification that are prescribed by the UGC.

Their number shouldn’t exceed 10% of the total number of teachers in the institute. The ‘Professors of Practice’ should be appointed as additional faculty beside the regular teachers. However, retired professors wouldn’t be considered for such posts.

The educational institutions could use their own fund or seek financial aid from companies to pay the ‘Professors of Practice’.

Recently, the UGC allowed the appointment of experts in their respective fields to higher educational institutions as ‘Professors of Practice’ without considering their educational qualification. Those who are well known in the field of engineering, science, media, literature, fine arts, entrepreneurship, social sciences, civil service and defence forces can conduct classes. However, they should have proved their talent or expertise in the respective fields for at least 15 years.

The universities and higher educational institutions can invite these faculty specialties for conducting special classes or sessions.
