Apply for Design, Fashion Technology courses at NIFT

The National Institute of Fashion Technology is a premier institute that scientifically trains youngsters who aspire to make a mark of their own in the global fashion industry

The online applications for admission to various courses at 18 centres, including Kannur in Kerala, could be submitted until 31 December.

However, aspirants could apply until the first week of January by paying a late fee of Rs 5,000.

The admit cards will be available on the website by the third week of January.

The admission fee is Rs 3,000. Scheduled Caste/Tribe applicants and persons with disabilities need to pay Rs 1,500.

Programmes and Eligibility
A) Bachelor of Design (BDes): This four-year course has specialisations in fashion/ leather/accessory/textile/knitwear design/and fashion communications. Those who have passed Plus Two can apply.

B) Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech): The candidates need to pass Plus Two with Maths and Physics as the core subject for applying to this four-year course.

C) Master of Design (MDes): The eligibility for this two-year graduation course is a three-year diploma from National Institute of Design or NIFT. The candidates should know the basic ideas of designing. These wouldn’t be taught in the course.

D) Master of Fashion Management (MFM): This course lasts for two years. Those who have graduation or three year diploma from NID or NIFT can apply.

E) Master of Fashion Technology (MFTech): Those who apply for this two-year course should have qualified BF Tech from NIFT or any BTech.

Final-year students too can apply for these courses. They, however, need to prove their eligibility by 30 September, 2023. There is no minimum marks criterion.

The candidates who apply for the graduate programmes should not be above 24 years as on 1 August, 2023. There will be age relaxation of 5 years for Scheduled Caste/Tribe applicants and persons with disabilities. However, there is no age limit for the masters programmes.

Reservation benefits as per the guidelines of the central government is available for all the courses.

The fees for the four-year bachelors programmes will be around Rs 14 lakh. The accommodation charges have to be paid additionally.

NIFT, Kannur
The centre in Kannur offers B Des graduate programmes in fashion/textile/ knitwear design and fashion communication. Besides, there are masters programs in BF Tech in apparel production and design/fashion management. There are 34 seats up for grabs in each programme. Moreover, 7 additional seats are available for each course, for the natives of Kerala.

Three seats are up for grabs in NRI category/and for foreigners.

Entrance test
The entrance test for all the courses has been scheduled on 5 February in 37 centres including Kochi, Kannur, Coimbatore, Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi. The results would be published in March. Meanwhile, the situation test and entrance would be held in April.

The final selection list would be published in May. The seat allocation is likely to be held from May – June onwards. NRI applicants and foreigners can apply until 30 April. They need not write the entrance. Their selection would be based on SAT/GMAT/GRE scores. The notification with the exact dates will be published later.

Question pattern
In the written test for design courses like BDes and MDes, there will be Creative Ability Test (CAT) besides the General Ability Test (GAT). BDes candidates who excel in the written test would be invited for the situation test. There will only be a GAT for the BFTech.

Meanwhile, there will be GAT and interview for the MFM and MF Tech programmes. In the objective type test, marks would be reduced for the wrong answers.

Usually, those who have a clear idea about the syllabus and pattern of the entrance test and have good training often get selected. Model questions are available on the website. It is not possible to get through the entrance only because one has drawing talents.

Those who complete courses from NIFT often get placed at good companies with impressive pay packages, via campus recruitment.
