Kerala's Minister for Higher Education, R Bindu, has said a state government scheme enabling students to earn while they study is ready to be rolled out.

The scheme titled 'karmachari' was proposed in the 2021-22 budget. "The first phase of the scheme will be implemented in the Kochi Corporation," said Minister Bindu.

The decision was made on Wednesday at a ministerial-level meeting also attended by General Education Minister V Sivankutty.

Higher secondary and college students who wish to work while they study can register online with the 'Digital Workforce Management System' under the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission, said the minister.

"Talks were held with employers regarding the salary and other benefits that the students will be entitled to as per labour laws," said the minister.

Instructions will soon be passed to principals of colleges and schools regarding the functioning of the scheme.
