Thiruvananthapuram: Serious discrepancies were found in the question paper of the Higher Secondary Class 12 English examination conducted for Kerala syllabus students on Saturday, said teachers.

According to them, 13 of the questions were exact copies from the question bank prepared by the Education Department for the VHSE (Voluntary Higher Secondary Education) course.  Moreover, the pattern of the questions had major differences with the model exam.

The questions which were replicated from the VHSE question bank were 1-8 and 17, 21, 23, 24 and 28. These questions carried total marks of 38.

The same English textbook and syllabus is followed in both Higher Secondary and VHSE classes. However, the authorities had issued different question banks for each course.

“In normal cases, questions in the question bank are not reproduced as such in a public exam. The change in the pattern in the English question paper is a serious lapse on the part of the Examination Wing,” said a teacher.

Teachers also allege still more anomalies in the English exam. “There were several errors in the poetry questions and the instructions to answer the grammar questions were incomplete. This made answering these questions very difficult for a majority of the students,” said a teacher.
