Human behaviour is complex and difficult to grasp at times. Human behavioural science helps to understand the motives of one's conduct.

The assessment and management of behavioural problems as well as the treatment of psychosocial problems and trauma are all aspects of Clinical Psychology. Those interested in this field of study may opt for a postgraduate degree from reputed institutions in Kerala.

Psychiatry versus Psychology

People often confuse these two terms and assume that they are the same. However, psychiatry and psychology are two disciplines that work in parallel. "There are big differences between these two areas of study, be it in their qualification to practise or the way they deal with or treat patients," said Dr Milu Maria, Assistant Professor and Head of Department of Psychology, Prajyoti Niketan College in Thrissur.

"While a psychiatrist requires an MBBS degree with a MD in Psychiatry, a clinical psychologist needs to pursue a postgraduate degree and an M Phil in this subject to practise. Psychiatrists adopt medicinal treatment for their patients, and psychologists utilise behavioural therapy," she explained.

Scope

Psychology has a huge relevance presently, with a rise in mental health issues and discussions following the COVID-19 pandemic and the long lockdowns in its wake. "There has been a spike in cases of depression due to social isolation, especially during the pandemic period, overuse of electronic gadgets, drug addiction, behavioural issues, and suicides in our country. This must be examined and resolved by experts in this field," said Dr Milu.

She added that candidates with a postgraduate degree in Clinical Psychology have good job prospects both across the country and abroad.

"Those who are qualified serve as advisers or subject matter experts for forensics or government projects. Some even serve as assistants to renowned psychiatric professionals or facilities. Candidates who want to work in this profession need to be committed and persistent,” she advised.
