Eyeing a career at sea? Apply for Indian Maritime University entrance test

The last date for the online registration for the Indian Maritime University-Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) is May 18. The online entrance test will be held on June 10 at the 86 centres, including in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Kozhikode in Kerala.

After counselling, the classes will begin on August 21.

The Indian Maritime University was established under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Shipping. The IMU campuses are in Navi Mumbai, Mumbai port, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Kochi. The 17 Director General of Shipping-approved institutes, affiliated to the IMU, are functioning in Kochi, Palakkad, Coimbatore, among others.

The annual IMU-CET entrance exam is conducted for admission to the six campuses and the affiliated institutes. The selection to the BTech Marine Engineering programme at the Cochin University of Science and Technology is also based on the IMU-CET entrance rank.

Several of the IMU courses promise good career prospects with high salaries. But apply for admission only after having a clear understanding of each course, job prospects and work environment. Applicants for courses, that involve travelling by sea, should be physically fit with good eyesight.

BBA courses

The three-year BBA (Logistics, Retailing & E-Commerce) classes will begin on August 1 at the Kochi and Chennai campuses. The Apprenticeship-Embedded BBA in Maritime Logistics course is held at Visakhapatnam.

For the above two BBA courses there is no entrance test. Selection is based on CUET/Class 12 marks. Preference is for candidates with good CUET score. The registration for BBA courses is till June 22.

• Three-year B Sc Ship Building and Repair - IMU-affiliated College of Ship Technology, Palakkad (Selection via college entrance.)

• B Tech Marine Engineering programme at Euro Tech Maritime Academy in Kochi.

• Two-year MTEch (Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering/Dredging & Harbour Engineering) - Visakhapatnam

• Two-year MTech Marine Technology - Kolkata

• Two-year MBA (International Transportation & Logistics Management) - Kochi, Chennai, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam

• Two-year MBA (Port & Shipping Management) - Kochi, Chennai

• One-year PG Diploma in Marine Engineering - Mumbai Port (no entrance, selection based on UG marks)

PhD & MS (by research) - Selection via offline entrance test (notification later)
