Some youngsters may not consider a high-paying post in a top firm as their only goal in life but would also be interested in bringing about a change for the better in society. For such students, social service organisations offer diverse opportunities to work.

A large number of such organisations function independently as well as under big corporate companies. Youths can join social organisations dealing with issues which are dear to them. For instance, there are organisations working to reduce crime in society. Others seek to reduce and gradually eradicate poverty. Still other organisations are involved in saving people from the ill-effects of alcohol and drugs.

Here are four careers to choose in this sector:

CSR

A large number of companies have a ‘corporate social responsibility (CSR) officer’ who implements the firm’s social intervention programmes. Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) also appoint such an officer.

The main duty of a company’s CSR officer is to improve the living conditions of the workers. Providing conditions to enjoy a happy family life and ensuring a favourable situation to work are among the tasks the officer is involved in.

An example for an NGO is Interfaith Centre on Corporate Social Responsibility which deals with human trafficking. Youngsters can work for this NGO if they have studied ethics and environmental issues. Daily activities include research, profit-loss analysis and interactions with team members.

Social work

Those who wish to involve themselves in social issues can opt for this field for studies as well as a profession. They can identify their favourite sector depending on individual interests and backgrounds.

There are opportunities to work as clinical social workers also, for which a postgraduate degree is necessary.

After graduation, you can study a special field such as health, school education or family issues related to children.

Regulation compliance

There are opportunities to work in the consumer service section of companies. Tasks include ensuring that the products are labeled correctly and that sales are conducted according to the rules. Interacting with employees who are unhappy with the working conditions and finding solutions to their problems is yet another responsibility.

Social entrepreneurship

Those who are interested in being self-employed can start their own ventures in the social sector. While some firms work for profit, others are totally dedicated to service. Yet other companies set apart a portion of their profits for activities benefiting society.

While working for any of these firms, one can support needy children, patients and victims of natural calamities.

A person can become a successful social entrepreneur with a creative mind, a clear idea about one’s goals and the resolve to turn those goals into a reality.
