Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya admissions: Apply online; selection test in Jan

Applications are invited from school students who wish to seek admission to Class 6 at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas for the next academic year. Online registrations could be done until August 10. There is no application fees. Selection would be based on the OMR test that has been scheduled at 11.30 am on January 20, 2024.

Jawahar Navodaya schools follow the syllabus of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from Classes 6 to 12. The medium of instruction until Class 8 would be in Malayalam. After that, Maths and Science classes would be taught in English and Social Science would be taught in Hindi.

The applicants who reside in the same district where the school is situated would be considered for admission.

Eligibility
The applicants should have completed Classes 3 and 4 in affiliated schools and should be currently studying in Class 5. Those who have completed Class 5 earlier and have passed in the second chance need not apply. Students who are studying in approved open schools should submit the ‘B’ certificate.

Age limit
The applicants shouldn’t be born before May 1, 2012 or after July 31, 2014. There is no age relaxation for any communities, including those of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes.

Features, benefits, exclusions
Navodaya Vidyalaya students have to reside on the campus.

Accommodation, food, uniform and books would be provided free of cost. There would be a monthly fee of Rs 600 from Classes 9 to 12.

Sudents who belong to Below Poverty Line category, Scheduled Caste/Tribe communities as well as girl children need not pay this fee. Meanwhile, separate fee structure is applicable for the wards of government employees.

There is 75% seat reservation for students who have studied in classes 3, 4 and 5 at schools in rural areas. Those who have studied in a school at an urban area, at least for a day, wouldn’t be considered for this. The remaining 25% seats would be open to those who have studied in both urban and rural areas.

14 Navodaya schools in Kerala
A Navodaya school functions in all the 14 districts in Kerala. There are 80 seats in each of these schools. At least one-third seats at these schools are reserved for girl students. Reservation benefits would be available for Scheduled Caste/Tribe communities in proportion to the population of the district. However, it wouldn’t be less than 15% and 7.5% respectively; neither would it be more than 50%.

Other Backward Classes are eligible for 27% reservation.

Besides, reservation for persons with disabilities too is available as per the guidelines issued by the central government.

Students who are promoted to Class 9 will have to study at a school in the Hindi-speaking region for a year.

Selection test pattern
The structure of the selection test is as follows:
1. There will be 40 questions that carry a total of 50 marks in the Mental Ability section. Candidates need to complete them in under 60 minutes.
2. Twenty questions from Arithmetic for 25 marks; it should be completed in 30 minutes.
3. Candidates need to answer 20 questions that carry 25 marks in the language section in under 30 minutes.
4. There would be 80 objective type questions that carry a total 100 marks. The duration of the test is 120 minutes.

Applicants must note that there are no negative marks for the wrong answers. They can write the exam in the language that he/she has studied until Class 5.

Candidates are allowed to attend this exam only once.

The results would be published on the website during March–April.
