New Delhi: The University Grants Commission has released the guidelines for integrating the Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) in the syllabi of under-graduate and post-graduate courses.

From the ancient Vedic concepts related to astronomy to the ancient Indian system of plastic surgery, UG and PG students have to strictly study the subjects related to IKS. Five per cent of the total credits in degree courses would be allotted to such courses. In the elective courses, a stipulated percentage of courses should be from this category.

Medical students are required to study the Indian systems of medicine in their course of study. The students should gain a basic knowledge about Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, in their first year. Meanwhile, the theory and practical courses of these have been included in the second year. These courses instruct about the ancient knowledge system related to plastic surgery.

A student of BSc Maths should learn an IKS course about the Vedic numerals and geometry. Meanwhile, a student of History should learn an IKS course related to this subject.

The UGC also suggests topics on India’s unique geographical features and epics 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata'.
