Thiruvananthapuram: Public schools in Kerala will not be allowed to conduct classes in other subjects during the periods allotted for extracurricular activities such as arts, sports and other music. An order to this effect has been issued by the Director of General Education.

The government took the decision following a notice sent to the General Education Department by the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Earlier, a group of students had submitted a complaint with the Commission in this regard.

In its notice, the Commission said that conducting classes in other subjects during the period allotted to extracurricular activities was a denial of the children’s rights.

The order issued by the Director of General Education applies to students from Classes 1 to 12.
