Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala and the Calicut university syndicates will be soon vested with the authority to issue degree certificates. A proposed amendment seeking to transfer the power from the Senate to the syndicate will be introduced soon.

The move follows the recommendations of a Committee that studied reformations to be initiated in the state’s Higher Education sector.

It’s the syndicate that issues the certificates in other universities. The certificate distribution process in these varsities happens more quickly as they don’t have to wait till the senate meeting is held.

Now the Kerala and Calicut universities too are on the path of change. The degree certificates should be issued within the stipulated period itself upon the strict implementation of the Right to Service Act. To facilitate this, the University Act and its provisions are being amended.

The same will also enable quick sanction of varsity files after obtaining the nod at various levels. The number of departmental levels providing the sanction will also be reduced, another initiative aimed at facilitating quick decision-making.

Also, steps will be initiated to set up Research Council, as a sub-committee of the Academic Council. This committee will be vested with the authority to grant recognition for activities such as research and academic cooperation among others.
