Sharjah: Mariam Al Hammadi has made aviation history by assuming the role of the first female Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) at the Sharjah International Airport, United Arab Emirates. Her appointment marks a milestone in the UAE's efforts toward indigenization within the civil aviation sector, according to authorities. The Civil Aviation authorities in Sharjah reiterated their commitment to fostering Emirati citizens' exploration of diverse professions, ensuring they receive ample opportunities in this endeavour.

Mariam's appointment as ATCO follows her successful completion of all requisite courses and training programs. Reflecting on her achievement, she expressed profound pride in assuming the role as Sharjah's pioneering Emirati woman ATCO.

"It is a great honour to contribute to my country's aviation sector. Beyond personal accomplishment, my appointment promises substantial benefits for the sector," Mariam remarked.

Mariam's journey to the ATCO position was characterized by exceptional skills and unwavering dedication. Having completed rigorous training with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in record time, Mariam cleared numerous courses within three years of joining the Sharjah Civil Aviation Department. She excelled in the ATCO Certificate of Competence Course.

Commenting on Mariam's appointment, Sheikh Khalid Bin Issam Al Qassimi, Chairman of Sharjah's Civil Aviation Department, emphasized the department's support for women's inclusion across all facets of the civil aviation sector.

"We take immense pride in welcoming Sharjah airport's first Emirati woman ATCO. This aligns with the country's leadership vision to acknowledge the pivotal role women can play as equal partners in the UAE's sustainable development," stated Sheikh Khalid.

As an ATCO, Mariam undertakes the critical responsibility of ensuring the seamless and safe operation of the global air traffic system. The role demands qualities such as sharp situational awareness, mathematical proficiency, quick decision-making abilities, maintaining composure under stress, and excellent short-term memory.

According to 2023 statistics, the Air Traffic Control at Sharjah airport managed approximately 364 schedules daily, totaling 104,000 throughout the year.
