Thiruvananthapuram: A meeting of the state curriculum committee presided over by General Education Minister V Sivankutty has approved the inclusion of a lesson on the powers of Governors in school textbooks. The meeting also gave its nod to release 95 textbooks which are the second volumes of textbooks for classes 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

The powers and responsibilities of Governors are explained in a chapter titled ‘Democracy, an Indian experience’ in Volume 2 of the social science textbook for Class 10. This chapter also deals with topics such as the crisis faced by Indian democracy during the Emergency, the Supreme Court judgment nullifying the electoral bonds and the political drama of hiding legislators in resorts to prevent defections.

The textbooks will be distributed among students before the Onam holidays. Meanwhile, the government has decided to include lessons on Governors’ powers in the political science textbooks for higher secondary classes.

Revision of higher secondary textbooks
The curriculum committee has decided to organise detailed discussions in classrooms to collect suggestions from students, teachers and guardians on revising the higher secondary textbooks. Workshops will also be conducted at the district and state levels for this purpose. Subsequently, work on preparing the new textbooks will begin.
