Rajinikanth’s latest outing, ‘Coolie’, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is now gearing up for its digital premiere. The film, which drew mixed reviews in theatres but still emerged a box-office winner, will stream on Amazon Prime Video from September 11 in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
In the action-packed drama, Rajinikanth plays Deva, a former coolie union leader who begins probing the mysterious death of his close friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj). His quest pits him against powerful adversaries — cartel boss Simon (Nagarjuna) and Dayal (Soubin Shahir).
Anirudh Ravichander’s score has been singled out as one of the film’s strengths, heightening Rajini’s mass moments with thunderous energy. The soundtrack also delivered crowd-pleasers like ‘Monica’, featuring Soubin Shahir and Pooja Hegde, with Soubin’s performance in particular making waves.
Visually, ‘Coolie’ banks on high-octane action. The hostel fight sequence, with its sharp camerawork and gritty stunts, is a standout. And for fans, the anti-hero shades written into Rajinikanth’s role have become major talking points, crafted to spark whistles in theatres.
Unlike Lokesh’s earlier films ‘Kaithi’, ‘Vikram’ and ‘Leo’, ‘Coolie’ stands apart and is not connected to the LCU (Lokesh Cinematic Universe).
With its upcoming OTT release, the film is all set to reach an even wider audience beyond theatres.
