There is a certain comfort in watching Rajinikanth walk into a scene and take complete control of it, and ‘Jailer 2’ knows exactly how to make the most of that.

Nelson Dilipkumar’s sequel brings back the swagger, the violence and the larger-than-life moments that made the first film click. The formula is familiar, sometimes almost too familiar, but the film has enough mischief and mass appeal to make its first half an enjoyable watch.

Tiger Muthuvel Pandian is once again caught in a dangerous game, this time with gangster Dilip, played by Suraj Venjaramoodu, who is out to avenge Varman’s death. The loss of Tiger’s son continues to haunt the family. However, the film is in no hurry to get to the heart of the conflict. It takes its time setting things up, and there are stretches where the narrative could have moved faster.

Thankfully, Nelson keeps the proceedings lively with humour. Yogi Babu and Namo Narayana get plenty of room to contribute, and their portions bring some much-needed levity to a story built around revenge and bloodshed. Suraj, meanwhile, makes a refreshing addition to the cast. He brings a distinct energy to Dilip, giving Tiger a new opponent who can hold his own on screen.

But make no mistake, this is Rajinikanth’s show. The actor seems entirely at home as Tiger, making even the most familiar gestures and punch dialogues feel like an event. His screen presence remains the film’s biggest selling point, and Nelson knows when to step aside and let his star work his magic.

The first half culminates in an interval block that delivers the expected high. ‘Jailer 2’ may not be breaking new ground, but it understands the pleasures of a proper Rajini entertainer. The story could use a tighter grip on its pacing, but the star power and humour keep the ride going.
