Easy tips to cut and clean fresh fish

Seafood or fish are a staple in the daily diet of Keralites. Most of us make sure that there is fish curry or fried fish with rice, for lunch. However, the youngsters often complain that it is difficult to cut and clean fresh fish. Here is food vlogger Lakshmi Nair, in her latest video, showing how to cut and clean fishes like tuna and mackerel, pretty easily. She says that any fish could be cut and cleaned like this without making a mess.

For cleaning the tuna, the fins on both sides of its body should be removed using a knife. Now, cut off the head and open the stomach to take out its entrails. Cut the fish in two or three chunks. Take a piece of it and cut through the side of the backbone of the fish. Now, remove the back bone slowly using your knife. You could cut through these pieces again until the knife hits the skin. Now, cut off the skin by holding the knife in a slanting position. Tuna is a fleshy fish and tastes amazing in curries. Cut off the gills on the head of the tuna that has already been removed. Clean the head and the backbones that have been kept aside. A delicious curry could be prepared using the head and the bones.

Meanwhile, to clean the mackerels cut off the fins and the bones on the sides first. Slit through the part where the head joins the body and slowly pull the skin off. Remove the gills and pull out the entrails of the fish. Now, clean the head by removing the bones. Some people do not remove the skin of the mackerel. Those who prefer to keep the tail of the mackerel can use it as it is or cut it off.
