Paragon Restaurant, the iconic name synonymous with the rich aroma of biryani, has earned a five-star rating at the Manorama Online Golden Clove Awards, an initiative that celebrates the finest dining destinations across Kerala. At a ceremony held at KTDC Waterscapes Resort in Kumarakom, the Paragon team received Golden Clove Five Star Restaurant award from Vir Sanghvi. The Manorama Online Golden Clove Awards are powered by Melam Masala as the main sponsor, with Kerafed as the co-sponsor.

A legendary name that has placed the culinary legacy of Kozhikode on the global map, Paragon carries with it a tradition spanning over 86 years. More than just a restaurant, it stands as a celebration of Kerala’s enduring love for biryani. Behind its rise into a globally recognised brand lies a remarkable story of resilience, vision and determination.

The making of a culinary icon
The journey of Paragon Restaurant began in 1939 with the ‘Paragon Baking Company’, founded by Govindan Panicker. His son, P M Vatsan, later took over and expanded the business, but a series of unexpected setbacks pushed it to the brink of collapse. It was during this difficult phase, in 1988–89, that a young Sumesh, who had little initial interest in the trade, stepped in to take charge of the struggling enterprise from his father. From that moment began Paragon’s remarkable second innings.

Sumesh brought with him a fresh vision that gave Paragon a new direction. He focused on innovation and introducing the now world-renowned Paragon biriyani by staying rooted in authentic flavours, without ever compromising on quality.

Equally important was his belief that the strength of the business lay in the well-being of its people. At a time when such practices were rare in Kerala, he ensured modern facilities for staff, including attached bathrooms in staff quarters. This approach fostered a strong sense of belonging among employees. Over time, Paragon evolved into a space that welcomed everyone alike, from daily wage workers to top professionals. For many who could not return home for lunch, it became a second home.

Going global
From its modest beginnings in Kozhikode, Paragon Restaurant has expanded its footprint to cities like Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Bengaluru, and even to international destinations such as Dubai. With the addition of associated brands like M Grill, Salkara and Brown Town Bakery, the Paragon Group has grown into a formidable business empire, employing over 3,000 people and recording an annual turnover of around Rs.225 crore.

The story of Sumeesh Govindan and Paragon Restaurant, who have carried the warmth of Kozhikode’s hospitality, the gentle sweetness of its Suleimani tea and the rich aroma of its biryani to the world, stands today as one of South India’s most remarkable success stories. Even now, the sight of people queuing up for a meal here reflects a legacy of flavour that continues to endure, untouched by time.
