Muthira puzhukku to go with a steaming bowl of kanji

Horse gram is considered a super food as it is known for its incredible nutritional benefits. It is a perfect item to be included in the monsoon diet. This miracle legume is considered a diabetic-friendly food source since it helps bring glycemic control and prevents increase in blood glucose levels. Check out this easy horse gram puzhukku recipe that tastes amazing with hot rice gruel.  

1 cup horse gram
1 onion or 15-20 shallots
7 red chilies
1 small cup grated coconut
Curry leaves
4 tbsp coconut oil
Salt as required

Dry roast the horse gram before cooking
Wash it well and soak for half an hour
Pressure cook the soaked horse gram with enough water and salt
Use the soaking water to cook the horse gram
Horse gram would be perfectly cooked with 8-9 whistles
Heat 3 tbsp coconut oil in a pan
Sauté crushed red chilies and shallots with some salt on low flame
Add some curry leaves too
Add grated coconut when the raw smell of the shallots is gone
Sauté well
Into it add the cooked horse gram along with cooking water
Mix well
Cook well until the water is reduced
The dish shouldn’t be too dry
Sprinkle some coconut oil before turning off the flame
Keep the dish aside for 5 minutes before serving.
