Homemade chutney powder to go with idli

Chutney powder is a spicy and tasty side dish that could be enjoyed with idli or dosa. It is easy to make it at home and can be stored for a long time. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients
8 whole red chillies
6 Kashmiri chillies
½ cup urad dal
¼ cup Bengal gram
2 tbsp raw rice
½ tsp pepper
1 tbsp sesame seeds
2 sprigs curry leaves
½ tsp asafoetida
½ tsp salt

Preparation
Heat a thick bottomed pan
Dry roast the red chillies and Kashmiri chillies on low flame for 10 minutes or until the skin turns dark
Set them aside to be used later
Now dry roast the urad dal and Bengal gram in the same pan
When it is half done, add the sesame seeds and pepper corns
Set them aside
Take the roasted grams and the chillies in a mixer jar
Add ¼ tsp salt and asafoetida
Grind into a coarse powder
Transfer this into a bowl
It is better to do this in batches so that the ingredients would have the right consistency
After it has cooled down, store in air tight jars
Mix ghee or sesame oil in the powder before serving.
