All it takes is 10 minutes to make this Tamil Nadu special spinach masiyal

Loaded with iron and other essential nutrients, spinach could be used to make lots of dishes like thoran (stir fry), aviyal and flavoursome curry. During the season, at least one type of spinach dish is generally cooked in all the households in Kerala. Besides, this is an excellent food item for those who are trying to lose weight. Tamil Nadu-style masiyal is a tasty curry that could be cooked in under ten minutes. Check out the recipe.

Ingredients
250 gms spinach
½ cup toor dal
10 shallots
½ cup tomatoes
3 green chillies
1 small piece of tamarind
1/8 tsp turmeric powder
Salt as required
½ tsp mustard seeds
2 red chillies
1 tsp oil
Curry leaves

Preparation
Cook shallots, tomatoes, green chillies, tamarind and turmeric powder with some water in an earthen vessel
Add the spinach when this mixture is cooked
It is better to add whole spinach leaves
Close the lid and cook for five minutes
When the spinach is nicely cooked, mash it using a curdling rod
You could also use a hand blender or blend in a mixer jar
Add the cooked toor dal and salt as required
Heat oil and splutter mustard seeds and urad dal
Sauté curry leaves and red chillies
Add this tempering to the curry
Sprinkle some fresh ghee too
Pour some water in order to loosen this curry a bit and you could enjoy it as a refreshing soup.
