Thambuli: A classic yoghurt based dip perfect for summer

Thambuli, the delicious yoghurt based curry /dip is a popular South Indian dish that originated in Karnataka. As yoghurt is the main ingredient, Thambuli is a perfect summer dish to keep your gut healthy. It cools the body and aids digestion too. Thambuli could be served as a main side dish with rice or as a refreshing dip. Interestingly, Thambuli is similar to the moru curry (spiced buttermilk) in Kerala. Ingredients
1 cup yoghurt
½ grated coconut
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 – 2 green chillies
1 small piece ginger
Salt as required
1 tbsp coconut oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
Curry leaves
1 dried chilli
Preparation
- Grind coconut, cumin, green chilies and ginger with some water
- Add this mixture into the yoghurt
- Add salt and mix well
- Heat coconut oil in a pan
- Splutter mustard seeds and dried chilli and curry leaves
- Pour this tempering into the yoghurt mix
- Mix well
- You could also garnish Thambuli with chopped coriander or mint leaves.

½ raw mangoes (cut into small pieces)
1 cup yoghurt
½ cup grated coconut
1 tsp cumin seed
1 – 2 green chillies
Salt as required
1 tbsp coconut oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
Some curry leaves
1 dried chilli
Preparation
- Cook the mango pieces with some water until they are soft
- Grind coconut with cumin and green chillies
- Add the cooked mangoes and yoghurt into this mixture
- Add salt and mix well
- Heat coconut oil in a pan
- Splutter mustard seeds and dried chilli and curry leaves
- Pour the tempering into the Thambuli
- Give everything a good mix
- Add a pinch a sugar if the mangoes are too sour. You could also loosen the consistency of the Thambuli by adding some water.
Tasty Thambuli could be made with ash gourd or cucumbers too.
