The moment the monsoon showers begin, many Kerala homes bring out a familiar remedy from the kitchen shelf – chukku kappi. This comforting drink, made with dried ginger, spices and coffee, has been a rainy-season staple for generations.

Instead of measuring out the ingredients every time, prepare a ready-to-use chukku kappi premix that can be stored for weeks. All you need to do is add a spoonful of the premix to boiling water, sweeten it with jaggery and enjoy a freshly brewed cup in minutes.

Why drink chukku kappi during the monsoon?
The rainy season is often associated with colds, sore throats and sluggish digestion. Chukku kappi has long been part of Kerala's traditional home remedies during this time of year. While it is not a medicine, many of the ingredients used in the drink have traditionally been valued for their warming and digestive properties.

Dried ginger (chukku) may help support digestion and provide a warming effect during cold, damp weather. Black pepper adds spiciness and is traditionally used in herbal preparations for coughs and congestion. Cumin and coriander seeds are commonly used to support digestive comfort, while cardamom and tulsi lend their distinctive aroma and flavour. Jaggery balances the spices with natural sweetness, making the drink both soothing and satisfying.

Although many people enjoy chukku kappi as part of their wellness routine, it should not be considered a substitute for medical treatment. Those with specific health conditions or dietary restrictions should consult a healthcare professional if necessary.
