Ever seen WhatsApp forwards that said 'wearing dark-coloured or underwired bras' can lead to breast cancer? Or that deodorants, cell phones and even microwaves can trigger it? Our online spaces are filled with reasons that can lead to various types of cancers, especially breast cancer, as the number of its patients is increasing at a rapid pace in our society. In the past, it was mostly found among people with a family history. However, none of that matters now. Regardless, it is important to bust various myths around the disease. Oncologists Dr Aju Mathew of the Medical Centre, Ernakulam; Dr Sanju Cyriac and Dr Amrita TS of Rajagiri Hospital, Kochi, shed light on what the facts are behind a handful of breast cancer myths.

a) Myth: No pain means no cancer
The doctors say that in the initial stages of the cancer, most breast cancer patients have no pain. The main symptom of the cancer is painless cysts. Therefore, do not ignore them just because they don't cause any pain.

b) Myth: I have no family history, so I won't get it
Around 85 to 90% of people who get breast cancer do not have a family history. Anyone can get the disease. The only factor is that if you have a family history, you have a bigger risk of getting it.
c) Myth: Biopsy will spread the cancer
It is an absolute myth. A biopsy is important to determine whether a cyst is cancerous.

Main reasons for cancer
According to the doctors, a change in Kerala's lifestyle is the main reason for the increase in breast cancer in our society. They also quote the change in diet patterns, including fatty foods, lack of exercise, obesity, late marriages and pregnancies and even lack of enough breastfeeding as reasons for breast cancer.
