A minimalist house with lots of surprises inside

Edathua natives Tijo Thomas and Emily wanted a unique contemporary design for their new house as they wished their home stands apart from all the houses in the neighbourhood which were mostly built in the traditional style.

The plan of the house was drawn by Sreekant Polackal, and the elevation was designed by Pickcellent, an architecture firm based in Kannur. It was VJ Interiors, Kayamkulam which did the interiors of this elegant house.

Elevation

The elevation of this house which stands in an 18 cents plot near a paddy field is designed in a minimalist way. The square shaped elevation is in fact the most striking feature of the exterior. This shape is continued in the interiors, boundary walls, and even furniture. Column beams have been used to build the foundation.

Living area

There are family and formal living areas in the house. The sofa done in teak wood adds to the elegance of the area. A prayer area is arranged in the formal living space. A display rack separates both the living areas. The prayer area and the display rack are made of marine ply.

Wash area

Though the house is single-storey, a staircase has been built as the family may construct an upper floor in the future. The wall near the landing of this stairway is adorned with photographs of various stages of the construction of the house. The wash area here is separated by marine ply-glass partition.

Dining area

The dining table and chairs are in teak wood. A crockery shelf in veneer-pasted marine ply completes the dining space. False ceiling is done in the living and dining areas. Long windows let in lots of natural light and fresh air.

Bedrooms

There are three bath-attached bedrooms in the house. A wall in the bedrooms is highlighted using a different colour. Here, the false ceiling is done only on the edges. 2x2 ft tiles in matte finish are paved on the floor. The bedrooms do not share walls thereby ensuring enough privacy.

Kitchen

The cabinets are made with laminated marine ply. Granite is paved on the counter top. The windows near the stove let in sunshine and fresh air.
