Classy minimalism, unique features make this Thodupuzha house a stunning spectacle

Businessman Saji Paul’s dream home is at a serene hamlet called Vannapuram near Thodupuzha, Kerala. This house, designed in 2900 sqft area with 4 bedrooms, stands elegantly on a 20 cents plot. The beautiful features and chic designs lend it a unique look that is rarely seen on houses in Kerala. Brighter shades of hues, show walls or claddings that are usually added to enhance the overall look of the house do not feature on this house. Meanwhile, earthy tones that match the stunning landscape and other minimalistic designs make this abode a soothing treat to the eyes.

The lighter shades of colors, the unique tiles used for roofing, the plants that are planted in the garden, the design of the window panes, the beautiful walk way and the adjacent bell post remind one of the contemporary houses that are commonly seen in the Europe and Australia.

The drive way paved with hard rocks leads to a flight of granite steps and then the entrance area. The idea of a sit out that is common to the houses in Kerala is executed in a unique and interesting way here. A sitting space with built – in shoe rack is arranged on one side of the entrance door.

The entrance door opens to the foyer space which connects the public area of the house with the private area. Excellent planning and execution of spaces is what gives privacy to each area in this house that is designed in 2900 sqft area.

The theme of minimalism is continued in the interiors as well. Though vitrified tiles are used for flooring, its unique pink shade and slate finish add an elegant charm to the spaces. From the beautiful pieces of art that are hung on the walls to the design and color of the furniture, everything perfectly blends with the general theme of the house. The bedrooms and the kitchen are arranged in the modular theme by including furniture that has utility. The colors and finish of it are in sync with the beautiful theme of the house.

Four bedrooms are arranged on the left side of the house; while the right side is reserved for the living and the dining areas and the kitchen. The architect explains that such a design technique has been adopted to suit the geography and surrounding features of the plot.

The designs of the interiors are inspired from the Australian houses that clearly demarcate spaces for the indoor and the outdoor aspects of living. So, there are courtyards beside the bedrooms and the living areas as well, which actually make the house look incredibly vaster.

The family was very particular about ensuring excellent ventilation and air circulation. The most brilliant aspect of the floor plan is that cross – ventilation is possible at all the corners and spaces in this house. Not just in the bedrooms, air circulation creates a pleasant atmosphere in the entire house. This feature is particularly beneficial during the blazing summers of Kerala.

Saji was very open - minded about the idea of a home which actually gave the architect freedom to diverge from the traditional concepts and embrace a modern and contemporary style. This scintillating house thus becomes a perfect example of an abode that reflect the unique and progressive attitude of the family rather than being a soulless structure whose only merit is the huge amount of money spent to build it. This house indeed stands out for its minimalism and classy elegance and not overwhelming size or luxurious features.
