Take these easy steps to relieve your child from mental stress

Stress affects even nursery kids these days. Earlier, it was considered to be an adult problem. Some studies even indicate that children undergo more severe mental stress than grown-up people.

Paediatricians say that youngsters develop bad habits owing to stress. Counselling experts support this view, pointing out that addiction to video games and porn websites seen in kids could be attributed to mental tension. However, effective intervention by mothers can prevent aggravation of stress and also provide relaxation of mind. The following measures can be adopted for the purpose:

» Find out the exact cause of the stress by asking the children themselves. In fact, many of their problems may seem silly to you but for the kids they are very serious matters. However, a long conversation may be needed to identify the real reason for the stress.

» Try to become a good friend of your child, instead of being a strict mother. This may encourage the youngster to be open and share everything with you. A youngster may be reluctant to reveal many thoughts with his or her mother but would be willing to do so with a friend.

» Train your child in writing a diary in which all major events of the day could be recorded. You can later refer to the diary to learn the problems haunting your child as all youngsters would certainly mention the most painful incidents they faced.

» Teach your child to say ‘No’. Moreover, never force the kid to take up tasks which they are incapable of completing. For instance, do not ask a child who has no sporting talents to win a medal in an athletics meet. Similarly, it is better to avoid telling an average student to secure the top rank. You should also ensure that other people do not exert similar pressure on your child.

» All children have to be instructed on ways of looking at a situation from a different angle. This would help build confidence in them to pursue alternatives when one option fails. Motivational books would go a long way in guiding youngsters in this direction.

» Open spaces are big stress relievers. Take your child out of the confines the house to places like a park or beach at least every week. According to experts, such outings would inspire kids to approach life with an open mind. Another benefit of visiting public areas is that youngsters can see first-hand the life of other people.
