Infants and toddlers usually develop a habit of putting things into their mouth. Usually, parents or elders who are watchful, step in at the right moment and take out the thing from the mouth. But sometimes the baby's act can turn out dangerous causing panic in the family. So it is important to keep in mind the remedial measures to respond to such situations cautiously.

Generally, children under five years of age tend to swallow and put things in their mouths because they do not understand the danger. Sometimes due to blood deficiency, babies have the tendency of putting other things in their mouths. They should be shown to a doctor and if necessary they should be prescribed medicines to increase blood. The only way to prevent this is by keeping an eye on them at home and play school.

What will happen if you swallow it? Usually, kids tend to swallow pearls, pins, safety pins, marbles, coins, buttons, etc. Swallowed materials can enter the esophagus or the lungs. The ones that pass through the esophagus won't cause much harm as it releases through the stools. But sharp or chemical things can cause bruises to that part. During such instances, you can remove them through endoscopy or surgery. But if they enter your lungs, it can really be dangerous. Sometimes they can come out through a cough. If the child is showing discomfort promptly seek medical help. You can try a process called the Heimlich maneuver in such a scenario. But even that should be done by an expert.

What is Heimlich Maneuver?

» Place the baby's head down on the forearms. Hold the mouth open with your palm.

» Support the forearm on the leg and tap the shoulder blades with the other hand five times.

Not that every substance that enters your lungs should cause any problem. But this can cause pneumonia. During such instances, you have to do a bronchoscopy (inserting a tube inside your lungs).
