Singapore Covid-19 cases increase: What is causing the spike?

Mail This Article
Singapore and Hong Kong have seen a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the past few weeks. According to reports, there has been a 28% rise in cases, and hospital admissions have also risen. Apparently, China has also reported an increase in test positivity rates in hospitals, and Thailand has also reported two outbreaks this year. What's causing the current spike?
Reason for increasing infections
While many doubt whether the current wave is due to a new variant, officials say it is not. Apparently, it is caused by waning immunity, and therefore, they have asked citizens, especially the elderly and those with poor immunity, to take booster shots of the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, the main variants in Singapore are LF 7 and NB 1.8, which are related to the JN 1 strain.
Should India be worried?
India does not indicate a new wave yet; there are just 93 active cases in the country now. However, experts are asking to exercise caution.
Covid-19 vaccines
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, everyone older than six months should get updated COVID-19 vaccines. Those who recently had an infection should get them only after three months, but others need not. A while ago, the World Health Organisation also recommended that the vaccines target the Omicron subvariants like JN 1 and KP 2.
