Around 30 – 40 per cent of people in the world suffer from seasonal allergies called hay fever or allergic rhinitis. Allergies are commonly seen among the masses during March – June. Runny nose, sneezing and itching eyes are some of the symptoms of seasonal allergies. It is safe to use most allergy medicines temporarily for a short period of time. However, doctors say that only some of them should be taken daily. Experts note that nasal steroid sprays, eye drops, antihistamines, and nasal sprays can be safely used daily. However, steroid sprays should be used at least three months a year. Meanwhile, long-term use of medicines like leukotriene receptor antagonist and nasal spray for asthma and allergic rhinitis is safe.

Side effects of allergy medicines
Although some medicines can be used for longer periods, they can cause side effects in some people. These medicines may lead to mild or severe nervous disorders or even mental health problems. It must be noted that these side effects are mostly seen in youngsters. Regular use of nasal steroids may cause side effects like a bleeding nose, cataracts, or glaucoma. Meanwhile, long-term use of nasal steroids could cause growth issues in children.

Although medicines are prescribed for a short period of time, it is possible to control the allergy symptoms even after that.
