COVID-19 is reportedly back in ‘action’ with more severe symptoms and high transmission rates. NB.1.8.1, also known as Nimbus, is a new version of the Omicron strain and is reportedly responsible for most COVID-19 cases in Asia. Piercing throat pain as if a razor or a shard of glass has got stuck in the throat is the primary symptom of this variant. The pain worsens when the patient swallows saliva.

Heaviness in the chest, exhaustion, a mild cough, fever, and muscle pain are some of the symptoms of the Nimbus variant. Some may even suffer vomiting and dysentery. More than 10 per cent of COVID-19 cases in Asian countries are reportedly due to the Nimbus variant. Additionally, Nimbus has been reported in the US, Canada, and in some parts of Europe as well. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation assures that this variant isn’t too dangerous and that the vaccines are effective against Nimbus.

Gargling with salt water can soothe the throat pain. Throat lozenges and sprays that contain methanol and benzocaine will give temporary relief. Drinking hot liquids, such as herbal tea, can help keep the throat moist and reduce discomfort. Humidifiers that add moisture to the air can help prevent the throat from becoming dry. Painkillers like paracetamol and ibuprofen may also be helpful. However, these medicines should not be taken without consulting a doctor.
