Video of man feeding raw milk to infant directly from cow’s udder: Is it safe? Dietitian explains

Cow’s milk is often recommended as a safe alternative to breast milk in children. However, the video of a man letting a baby suck directly from the cow’s udders has now gone viral on social media. The clip was posted on X with the caption, “Is it good for the baby? Please comment”. A while ago, drinking unpasteurized raw milk became a trend, with many posting videos of the same on social media. However, how safe is it?
Pasteurised milk is recommended for human consumption as the process kills bacteria like E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella that raw milk can harbour. According to Cleveland Clinic dietitian Erin Rossi, RD, LD, most evidence suggests that drinking raw milk is not healthy. It can cause foodborne illness, which can even lead to hospitalisation, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Risks of drinking raw milk
1) A person taking raw milk can be at risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or avian flu.
2) While most healthy people can recover from the ill-effects of drinking raw milk, older people, pregnant women and children, whose immune systems can be weak, can quickly get very sick. Symptoms can even be life-threatening.
